This fifth edition of the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting was written to serve as a primary text for the firefighter candidate or as a reference text for firefighters already on the job. The manual addresses the fire fighting objectives found in the NFPA® 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 2008 Edition. The manual also includes three new appendices, as well as nearly 1280 illustrations and photographs and is a “good fit” for volunteer firefighters who are not involved in fire rescue. Also included in the manual is a bonus student CD-ROM. Since the 1st Edition of Essentials was released in 1978, more than 2 million firefighters have been trained by this manual. The Essentials fifth edition study guide includes more than 1000 study questions and provides assistance with the certification exam. Each chapter in the study guide is broken into FF I and FF II sections as appropriate. As with the print version, this CD-ROM study guide may be used with both the Essentials of Fire Fighting (5th edition) manual and the Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations (5th edition) manual. All of the questions are multiple choice and arranged by chapter. The student can specify the number of questions and the range of pages in the manual from which the study questions are chosen. Each time the student uses the program, the questions appear in random order. The student receives immediate feedback as to whether each question was answered correctly or incorrectly. If answered incorrectly, the student is given the page number where the information appears in the manual so that he/she can review the material. When the student completes the questions, the percent of correct answers is reported. The student can print a study sheet to help review topics that need further study. Students who perform well using this study guide should be prepared to successfully complete a formal course or certification examination.
